The “High School Diploma” program Innovative accelerator for Myanmar’s orphan students

by staff volunteer Wai July 1, 2017

The "High School Diploma" program, developed by the Mary K. Yap Foundation, is one of our flagship programs which aims to support the educational needs of orphans in Myanmar. The primary focus of the program is to pay closer attention to the last three years of high school studies which is regarded as critical years for high school graduates.

Due to the widespread degree of inadequacies in public school systems from Myanmar, every children is depended on receiving some form of after-school tuition classes to help them accelerate to higher grade levels. Those who can afford are more privileged than others, and have greater latitude to attend college. Those who could not afford to hire private tutors are simply left behind since little or no support structures were made available for the students to prepare them for high school examinations.

According to the Myanmar’s Educational system, the school children can receive a high school diploma after passing the 10th grade matriculation examination. Without the completion of the high school curriculum, the students will be faced virtually with no prospects for higher education and hence, the career advancements will be bleak for these children. Many of them will be isolated, unwanted, and possibly ignored by the larger community. One could not possibly imagine the number of children who did not pass the 10th grade because they were denied from their basic educational needs, and the children did not have any member from their immediate families supporting their basic needs because they came from an orphaned background.

Our ambition is to transform the lives of Myanmar orphans to become independent and productive members in their communities. The High School Diploma” program, is a first step to empower disadvantage youths to expand their skillsets and knowledge so that the children can advance socially and professionally to the next level.
